It is going to take your visitors less than a second to size up your website and form an opinion, the online world has a short attention span and makes snap decisions.  The onus is on you and your web designer to create a site that creates a positive impression.  That being said here are 5 web design mistakes you don’t want to make.

No Clear Direction

Good web design is clear and concise, it allows users to scan your site and immediately understand what it is all about.  You have a visual hierarchy in place, good headings that are descriptive and it is easy to get around.  You want to make sure that your content is well organized, your outbound and internal links make sense.  If you sell things on your site make sure the prices are clear and the category names work.

Good User Experience

If a visitor comes to your website they want to be able to find information about the products and services easily.  You need to take control of your site and organize the information clearly and concisely. Check and make sure all of your links are working, the navigation is clear, your home button is visible and your logo takes a visitor back to the home page.

Not Too Simple

There is a fine line between good clean design and something that goes too far and veers into boring.  Minimalist design is easy to read and digest but you cannot strip out everything and have a solid wall of text.  You need color and compelling images too.  You design needs to be clear while still being engaging.

Too Slow or Non-Responsive

Everybody and their dog has a smartphone, the mobile market is almost 70% of internet traffic and most of these people won’t stay on a site that isn’t mobile friendly.  Not only that it needs to load quickly enough on a mobile device that the user doesn’t abandon your site because it takes too long.  Seconds can make a huge difference in whether your visitor stays or not.  On top of that Google will punish you for having a slow site.

Skimmable Content

Content that is easily scanned will boost your conversions by almost 40%, it is that important.  Don’t use more than 3 sentences per paragraph and no more than 20 words per sentence.  Use headings, images, bullets and white space.  Bite size chunks of content broken up my images will win every time.

Building a good website is a combination of art and science.  You want something that is pleasing to the eye but that is completely focused on the user and what they expect to see.  Your website is never complete you will be updating and tweaking to make sure that it works for you.
